Description

The Adriatic grayling (Thymallus aeliani) is a freshwater fish endemic to the Po Valley in Italy, particularly in the rivers that flow into the Adriatic Sea. It is the only native species of grayling in Italy and the Adriatic basin. Its distinctive large and colorful dorsal fin, along with its gray-green color and black spots, set it apart from the European grayling. This social species forms large schools and can reach a length of 50 cm. It feeds on aquatic larvae, insects, small crustaceans, and fish, and is preyed upon by larger species such as the marble trout.

The Adriatic grayling is critically endangered due to threats such as hybridization with other grayling species, river alterations (due to water extraction, dams, pollution, and overfishing), and predation by piscivorous birds. The introduction of non-native species has also impacted its populations. Currently, it is nearly extinct, but conservation efforts, such as the LIFE GrayMarble project, are expected to help restore its population in some areas.
