Description

The Mediterranean trout (Salmo macrostigma or Salmo cettii) is an endemic species of the Mediterranean region, found in the upper reaches of rivers in the Apennines, Western Alps, and the basins of Sardinia, Sicily, and southern Italy. Its presence has also been recorded in waters of Algeria, France, and Spain, suggesting it may have migratory habits towards the sea.
In Italy, this species faces a critical situation, with populations declining and isolated in small mountain streams. Many of the original populations have disappeared, replaced by introduced Atlantic-origin trout.
To protect this species, the LIFE STREAMS project is working on its recovery in six pilot areas across Italy. Its actions focus on conserving and strengthening native populations through coordinated strategies, including genetic recovery.
Additionally, sustainable fly fishing tourism is promoted as a means to value and preserve these trout. By linking their conservation to benefits for local economies, the aim is to ensure that communities view river protection as a source of development. This approach fosters a positive relationship between environmental preservation and responsible tourism.
